VIHTAVUORI POWDER
Vihtavuori powder 24N41 is a single-based treated rifle powder very similar to the 20N29. It has a very large grain size (length 2,3 mm by diameter 1,3 mm) and an extremely slow burning rate ideally suited to the .50 BMG.
It can also be used for some large-capacity cases, such as the .300 Lapua Magnum, .300 Rem. Ultra Mag, and the .338 Lapua Magnum. Of the two, Vihtavuori powder 24N41 is slightly faster than 20N29, with a renewed relative burning rate of 39 for the 24N41 compared to 36 for the 20N29, when N110 is given the index 100.
VIHTAVUORI – THE POWER OF ACCURACY
For almost a hundred years, Vihtavuori powders have formed the heart of many of the world’s most renowned cartridges.
Reloaders know they can trust in the performance and uniform high quality of Vihtavuori smokeless powders – cartridge after cartridge – to create a perfect product for successful shooting.
When choosing our reloading powder you know your ammo is up to the task, even in the toughest conditions. Go ahead, take Vihtavuori and make the perfect shot.
WHY CHOOSE VIHTAVUORI POWDERS FOR RELOADING?
All of our gun powders meet the strict requirements of both civilian and military needs.
They’re Clean Burning
Our use of only the finest of raw materials is a renowned characteristic of all Vihtavuori powders. We take great pride in producing a very pure and clean-burning powder that allows longer shooting sessions between cleanings.
The clean-burning characteristics of our rifle and handgun powders result in greatly reduced carbon build-up and powder fouling.
Ultimately giving longer barrel life for rifles. Read more on our rifle and handgun powders here!
They come with a Decoppering agent
After extensive testing and development, we’ve begun adding a decoppering agent to all of our smokeless powders.
This additive deters the adhesion and build-up of copper fouling in the bore, ie. the inside of the barrel of a firearm. Vihtavuori Powder
Excessive jacket material fouling is a well-known and established cause of accuracy loss when shooting.
Our new decoppering agent prevents much of barrel fouling from building up in the first place, greatly prolonging your shooting sessions, and extending barrel life.

They’re extremely temperature stable
Temperature stability in reloading powders has always been a consideration, but with the recent improvements in Long Range and ELR shooting, it has become a factor of major concern to shooters.
Firing at long ranges places greater demands on ammo, equipment, and the shooter himself for instance. Vihtavuori Powder
Enabling a shooter to meet these demands means refining the process, and eliminating those variables which reduce hit probability. Vihtavuori Powder
The production of increasingly temperature-insensitive propellants allows for greatly reduced Extreme Spreads and Standard Deviation, which translates directly to less vertical dispersion on target.
They’re lot-to-lot consistent
This demanding process requires constant testing, verification, and adjustment to ensure that each run is perfectly compatible with those before and after. Vihtavuori Powder
This is a guiding principle of our powder production philosophy in other words.
We require extreme accuracy and quality at every step of our production process, most importantly.
VIHTAVUORI IS EXPERIENCED, QUALITY CRAFTSMANSHIP FOR THE PERFECT AMMO
Firstly, we manufacture our propellants entirely in-house, and this ensures their high quality.
Vihtavuori rifle and pistol powders deliver consistently flawless firing performance most importantly – for you this means reliable reloading and ammunition you demand.
Each stage of the production process is subject to stringent quality control by our experts to therefore ensure that each production lot has the exact ballistic performance required.
Moreover, the grain geometry of different gunpowder types provides the wanted combustion characteristics for the chosen cartridge application.
In conclusion, all Vihtavuori Powders are available also in Industrial Packings.

WHAT ARE SMOKELESS POWDERS?
Smokeless powders, or propellants, are essentially mixtures of chemicals designed to burn under controlled conditions at the proper rate to fire a projectile from a firearm. Smokeless powders are made in three forms:
- Thin, circular flakes or wafers
- Small cylinders
- Small spheres
Single-base smokeless powders derive their main source of energy from nitrocellulose. The energy released from double-base smokeless powders (such as the Vihtavuori N500 rifle powders) is derived from both nitrocellulose and nitroglycerine.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A SMOKELESS POWDER BURNS?
All smokeless powders are extremely flammable by design, they are intended to burn rapidly and vigorously when ignited. Oxygen from the air is not necessary for the combustion of smokeless powders, since they contain sufficient built-in oxygen to burn completely, even in an enclosed space such as the chamber of a firearm.
In effect, ignition occurs when the powder granules are heated above their ignition temperature. This can occur by exposing powder to:
- A flame such as a match or primer flash.
- An electrical spark or the sparks from welding, grinding, etc.
- Heat from an electric hot plate or a fire directed or near a closed container even if the powder itself is not exposed to the flame.
When smokeless powder burns, a great deal of gas at high temperature is formed. If the powder is confined, this gas will create pressure in the surrounding structure.
The rate of gas generation is such, however, that the pressure can be kept at a low level if sufficient space is available or if the gas can escape.
In this respect smokeless powder differs from blasting agents or high explosives such as dynamite or blasting gelatin, although smokeless powder may contain chemical ingredients common to some of these products.
High explosives such as dynamite are made to detonate, that is, to change from solid state to gaseous state with evolution of intense heat at such a rapid rate that shock waves are propagated through any medium in contact with them.
Such shock waves exert pressure on anything they contact, and, as a matter of practical consideration, it is almost impossible to satisfactorily vent away the effects of a detonation involving any appreciable quantity of dynamite. Vihtavuori Powder
Smokeless powder differs considerably in its burning characteristics from common “black powder”.
Black powder burns essentially at the same rate out in the open (unconfined) as when in a gun. When ignited in an unconfined state, smokeless powder burns inefficiently with an orange-colored flame.
It produces a considerable amount of light brown noxious smelling smoke. It leaves a residue of ash and partially burned powder.
The flame is hot enough to cause severe burns. The opposite is true when it burns under pressure as in a cartridge fired in a weapon.
Then it produces very little smoke, a small glow, and leaves very little or no residue. The burning rate of smokeless powder increases with increased pressure.
